Syracuse Opera opens its season with "Glory Denied," by composer Tom Cipullo. The contemporary opera is based on the book "Glory Denied: The Saga of Jim Thompson, America's Longest-Held Prisoner of War," by Tom Philpott.
After being held in captivity in Vietnam from 1964 to 1973, Floyd "Jim" Thompson discovered upon his release that his wife Alyce had started a new life with their four children and become involved with another man. Cipullo wrote the opera after a New York Times review of Philpott's book piqued his interest.
