Versalis, Italy's largest chemical manufacturer, and Genomatica, a San Jose-based technology leader for the chemical industry, have announced the establishment of a technology joint venture for bio-based butadiene from non-food biomass. Butadiene is a raw material used in the production of rubber for tires, electrical appliances, footwear, plastics, asphalt modifiers, additives for lubricating oil, pipes, building components and latex. In short, butadiene is a chemical that most people aren't familiar with, but they use it every day.
