Gilberto's Lounge, the venerable dive bar that was the subject of a recent column due to its pending sale, and the similar building next door on Rancho Cucamonga's Foothill Boulevard were built by an Italian American woman whose name bar owner Jack Gilbert couldn't recall.
But Mario Orioli can: It was his grandmother, Nicolina Orioli.
The structure was erected by Anthony Orioli for Nicolina, his mother, in the 1950s, with the help of his brother Bob and two brothers-in-law. Completed in 1959, the building first housed Sebastian's, a spaghetti restaurant named for Orioli's husband, and a bar.
