Little Italy, long known for its pizza and pasta, is slowing transforming itself into the proverbial melting pot. And the same goes for the rest of Wilmington's West Side. Both neighborhoods have emerged as the epicenter for ethnic restaurants, a sure-fire place to get authentic, home-cooked meals, thanks, in part, to the surge in the Hispanic population in the city and state.
Puerto Ricans are serving up fried plantain with shrimp and a special criolla sauce, chock full of bell peppers, garlic and cilantro. Peruvians are specializing in ceviche – fresh fish marinated in lemon juice, with tasty "inside-out popcorn" prefacing as an appetizer.
