Pizza Today, a popular pizza trade magazine, has named New Haven's Modern Apizza as its "2023 Pizzeria of the Year." The publication's executive editor, Denise Greer, profiled the State Street pizzeria and its owner, Bill Pustari, in a feature published July 31.
Widely considered part of “the Big 3” (one of New Haven’s top pizzerias alongside Sally’s and Pepe’s) Modern traces its heritage back to the mid-1930s, when Antonio “Tony” Tolli opened what was first Tony’s Apizza in its State Street location.
