When John Sartor came back from the Vietnam War, he and a buddy opened a bar in Cliffside Park, N.J., called R. Jay's Pub, a no-frills hangout for his family and friends.
"The bar was a familiar place for me," said Alyssa Sartor, his daughter. "You could say I grew up on a barstool." Ms. Sartor now has her own place, August Laura, a cocktail bar in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn. But her parents weren't initially thrilled when she went into the family business.
