Italian Wine Floods East Coast Ports, Lifting Import Volumes

Call it the summer of the sommelier. American consumers stocked up on European luxury goods, including wine from Italy and France in August, helping boost import numbers at the largest East Coast ports after a slow start to the peak summer shipping season.

On Friday, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey reported that the marine terminals around New York Harbor, the country's third-busiest port, in August imported 304,274 loaded twenty-foot equivalent units, or TEUs, a common measure of shipping container volume.
