A collection of sketches offers a glimpse of a now-vanished Rome

In the 19th century, Rome looked very different from now. The city had just 20,000 inhabitants and was full of orchards, vineyards and villas.

Just think that in 1864 -- when Rome was still governed by the Papal States -- a regulation barred the inhabitants from "letting whatsoever chicken, unclean animal, cow and mare meander in the squares and streets."
