An entrepreneur, politician, urban planner, essayist and editor, Adriano Olivetti was one of the great Italian figures of the twentieth century. As a passionate and great innovator, he revolutionised the industry and Italian culture, dreaming of a human-centred factory that would reconcile profit and humanity. Often misunderstood by his contemporaries, he responded to the description of utopian that was assigned to him by saying: "The word utopia is often used to label what we don't want, can't, or aren't brave enough to do. A dream seems like a dream until you start working to make it real.
Only then does it become something infinitely greater." Perceived as subversive by the business environment of his time, he was a great forerunner, an absolute pioneer who revolutionised the typewriter and produced the world's first personal computers. Here is a portrait of Adriano Olivetti, the genius father of Made in Italy.
