Athletics, Rome European Championships, another banner day for Italy: five medals won yesterday

It's never enough for us. At the European Athletics Championships in Rome came more medals (five), more Italian records (two and beautiful ones), more authoritative performances. On the day that had opened with the Yeman Crippa-Pietro Riva one-two over the half-marathon, along with also the team gold medal, Italy's athletics took another fine slice of glory in the evening.

The medal table is impressive (15 medals overall, three times as many as the best nations), the points standings calculated on the finalists is even better, with the other major European countries left at an abysmal distance. In a star-studded final of the women's 100 meters, between Britain's Dina Asher Smith and Poland's Ewa Svoboda, Zanyab Dosso finds her big space: the Italian is third.

We are so well accustomed to it that Catalin Tecuceanu's bronze in the men's 800 meters seems almost a regular occurrence. The Italian, who retains the best performance of the year, perhaps paid for the fatigue of the turns and his albeit effective finish seemed less brilliant than usual. For him it is the first international podium of his career, and wrapped in the flag he seems more than satisfied.

The evening at the Olympic opened with another splendid performance by Luca Sito, with an Italian record in the men's 400 meters.

For Filippo Tortu it is the turning point race in the men's 200 meters 20"14, the best time of the semifinals, just 4 cents off his personal best. Let's hope for the final. Also qualifying for the decisive round is the other Olympic 4x100 champion Fausto Desalu, second in his semifinal in 20"39.

Only one jump (but a thousand applauses) for Gianmarco Tamberi, olympic champion in the high jump: 2.21 in the first round is enough for him to earn a place in the 12-man final, where we will also see Stefano Sottile and Manuel Lando.

Three Azzurri are also in the finals in the triple jump: Mattia Bocchi, Andrea Dellavalle and Emmanuel Ihemeje.
