Organ, tissue and cell donations and transplants in Italy in 2021 returned to pre-pandemic levels. After the sharp slowdown in 2020, when the impact of Covid had led to a 10% drop, in 2021 the situation marked a +12.1% in organ donations and a +9.9% on transplants. 3,778 transplants performed in Italy in 2021, 341 more than in 2020. The regions with the most interventions were Lombardy (686), Veneto (523) and Emilia Romagna (486).

"The latest data from the National Transplant Center's report on 2021 is further confirmation of the extraordinary responsiveness that the National Health Service has demonstrated in these two years of pandemic," commented Health Minister Roberto Speranza. "We must continue to invest in an excellence such as the transplant network, both on the organizational front and in terms of promoting information, to convince more and more citizens to say yes to donation," the minister added.
