In 1969 Paolo Vitelli was a 22-year-old college student with a deep passion for the sea, so he founded Azimut Srl, a sail boat chartering company, in Avigliana (Torino province). One year later, Azimut was already the distributor in Italy of prestigious yachting brands such as Amerglass, Westerly, British Powles and Draco.
Later, Azimut decided to design its own boats and put them on the market. So began the story of what is now the leader builder of pleasure motor boats worldwide. In 1985, with the acquisition of the historical "Benetti Brothers" shipyard in Viareggio (which had been founded in 1873), Azimut inherited its highly technical experience and in short time it became a symbol of Italian craftsmanship declined on nautical luxury.
