Celebrating the Italian tricolore flag, after 219 years

January 7 is the National Day of the Flag and this year Italy celebrates the 219th anniversary of the birth of the First Tricolore, was invented in the city of Reggio Emilia in 1797, as the flag of the Republic Cispadana. That day, the representatives of four cities (Reggio Emilia, Modena, Bologna and Ferrara) proclaimed the tricolour flag with red, white and green colours the flag of the Republic as Cispadana, the new state arose under the protection of French arms.

The historic meeting took place inside the Town Hall in the large room that, to a design by Lodovico Bolognini, was built between 1772 and 1787 to house the general store of the Duchy. The room was called later the Hall of Congress and then Sala del Tricolore and is now home to the City Council and the most important institutional events in the city.
