Historic Villa Borromeo, which housed Leonardo Da Vinci among others, up for sale

A piece of Italian history has been put up for sale. Villa Borromeo of Senago, in Lombardy, is on the market after the group that owned the historic property went bankrupt last year and published an announcement on online real estate website www.casa.it.Built on the ruins of a Roman fort by the Visconti (the Milanese family who ruled Milan from 1277 to 1447), and used as fortress by Bernabò Visconti, the villa was named Borromeo in 1629.

In 1630, the villa, under archbishop Federico Borromeo, became a refuge for theologists and priests who had fled Milan plagued by pestilence. Throughout its seven centuries of history, Villa San Carlo Borromeo was host to innumerable Italian and foreign artists.
