Marcello Mastroianni was the perfect film actor. He had the face of every man. Women fascinated, intrigued and sometimes baffled him. He fell victim to their beauty and rarely won out in a relationship. In short, he was like us. I first saw Mastroianni in 'City of Women,' one of the first feminist films ever made. It was directed by Federico Fellini, the Italian maestro of the world of cinema.
Marcello plays a businessman from Rome who is taking a train to his work place. A woman steps into his club car. She is attractive and Mastroianni's mind is filled with one simple word: seduction. He tries unsuccessfully to seduce her in the restroom. She flirts with him but does not submit to his passions. When the train makes a stop, she leaves the train and Marcello follows her into a city of women. Fellini's cinema magic tells the rest of the story. I won't bother you with the details except to say Marcello, like most men, is in pursuit of the perfect woman. He finds her in 'City of Women' and what a disappointment it is.
