International rankings don’t do justice to “real” Italy, and Italians’ dark mood doesn’t help

Can a group of 87 managers decide if Italy is less competitive than Malta and Mauritius or if it has worse labor market conditions than Libya and Pakistan and an access to credit similar to Nigeria and Burkina Faso? Yes, they can, according to the World Economic Forum.

The organization known for its Davos meetings compiles its Global competitiveness index (which this year sees Italy as 47th in the world's ranking, 136th for jobs and 139th for credit) mainly based on the results of a survey of around 20 pages distributed across a selected group of opinion leaders for every country.
