It is no longer a secret that Italian soccer has become an attractive market to the eyes of U.S. investors, who over the last years have taken over some of Italy’s most renowned soccer clubs. The latest American to follow this rapidly-growing trend is Robert Lewis, 57, a New York-based attorney and manager of private equity fund JRL Group.
As Italy’s Corriere della Sera first reported, Lewis is on the verge of acquiring a majority stake in Cesena FC, an Emilia Romagna-based club that is currently competing in Serie C, the third tier of Italian soccer. Lewis, Corriere della Sera continues, will disburse €1.8 million ($2m) to acquire 60% of the shares in Holding CFC SpA, the holding company that is currently controlling Cesena FC. The deal is expected to be officialized next week.
