The city of Marathon has a sibling in the Tyrrhenian Sea and residents will get a chance to visit the sister city this fall. Loiri Porto San Paolo in Sardinia, Italy, became Marathon's sister city after three years of work from the Greater Marathon Chamber of Commerce and the City Council.
It is a coastal city on the island of Sardinia, west of the mainland of Italy. According to city website www.comune.loiriportosanpaolo.com, it has a population of 2,508 people and is 45.5 square miles wide. Mayor Chris Bull said cities in Canada and Cuba were early suggestions for a sister city until Gianna Todisco, a friend, suggested San Paulo.
