There’s Italian hospitality and then there’s Casa Maria Luigia. Just outside Modena—the historic town already famous for being home to Maserati, parmigiano reggiano, balsamic vinegar and lambrusco wine—also houses the former number one restaurant in the world, Massimo Bottura’s three-Michelin-starred Osteria Francescana. And now, there’s Casa Maria Luigia too.
People have waited months to get a reservation at Osteria Francescana, and then dropped everything to fly there as soon as they bagged one. That would have been me too, until an email dropped into my inbox last month announcing the opening of Casa Maria Luigia, an 18th century guesthouse in the Emilian countryside, opened by partners in life and business, chef Massimo Bottura and Lara Gilmore.
