The most unusual of Venice's bridges: the Ponte dei Pugni

I wonder: how many people know that Venice has a bridge dedicated to fist fighting,  and that its story lies all in its very name, the Ponte dei Pugni, or the bridge of fists? Forget about the baroque grandeur of Ponte dei Sospiri and don’t let your mind think too much about the fashionable centrality of Rialto bridge: when you look at it, the Ponte dei Pugni is simple and, while pretty – you wouldn’t expect anything in Venice not to be, it is truly rather unassuming. 

Located in the sestiere of Dorsoduro, just a stone’s throw from San Barnaba church, it crosses the homonymous canal, the Rio de San Barnaba. Architecturally, as said, it is quite simple, built in stone and bricks, with iron, cross-shaped railings supported by Istrian stone columns. Its only peculiarity are four Istrian stone footprints placed at its pathway.
