Padua, a college town seething with cocktail culture and Medieval frescoes

Padua is known throughout the world as "the city of the saint", in honor of Saint Anthony. The Portuguese Franciscan, born in Lisbon in 1195, died here on the 13th of June, 1231 in the historic neighborhood of Arcella, behind the station, where a beautiful frescoed church, the Sanctuary of Saint Anthony, commemorates the years he lived in the city.

The remains and relics of the Saint, however, are conserved in the city center in the Basilica, an important destination for hinderers of pilgrims throughout the entire year. The "capital" of fourteenth century painting, Padua also hosts many Medieval frescoes: Giotto, Mantegna, Altichiero, D'Avanzo and many others have left their marks within the palaces and the churches of the city center, first of all the famous Scrovegni Chapel.
