The hot Sicilian summer favors outdoor performances, and there are numerous events held in various locations across the island, under the starlit sky or bathed in moonlight. Although they occur biennially, the most famous performances take place in Syracuse—where, for several decades now, Greek tragedies and comedies have been performed in the theater and amphitheater, after sunset.
But the largest island in the Mediterranean, known as Trinacria for its triangular shape, boasts many other open-air theaters, almost always of Greek or Roman origin. These are also known as “stone theaters,” and as the name suggests, they are carved into the rock, with stepped seating that descends toward the stage.
