Italy’s Sofia Goggia earned an extraordinary 20th career World Cup win in St Moritz, taking gold just 24 hours after breaking her hand so badly that she required emergency surgery. Goggia finished second in Switzerland on Friday despite hitting a gate so hard she fractured her hand in two places and travelled by helicopter to Milan to go under the knife.
Less than 24 hours later, with a plate and nine screws in her left hand, the Italian lined up for the downhill in St Moritz once again with a pole taped to her damaged left hand. Remarkably, the 30-year-old went one better than a day earlier and put in a sensational performance to finish 0.43 seconds ahead of second-placed Ilka Stuhec of Slovenia.
