Pompeii is one of the world's largest, most famous, and most dramatic ancient Roman archeological sites. It was famously buried and frozen in time by the volcanic ash of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79.
Pompeii was not the only city to be buried by the eruption, the nearby seaside town of Heracleum was also buried and is considered the best-preserved Roman town today. These cities are so well-preserved that even the ancient graffiti of Pompeii is preserved today.
