Italian middle distance runner Yeman Crippa won the gold medal in the 10,000 meters at the ongoing European Athletics Championships in Munich, Germany. At age 5, Yeman was orphaned by his biological parents in Ethiopia. "I have some memories. Bad. They both left because of an infectious disease." Then adoption by an Italian couple. "I feel lucky. This, after all, is my second life."
It is the first European gold for Crippa, who had already won bronze in the 5,000 meters at these European Championships in Munich (four years ago, however, at the European Championships in Berlin he won bronze in the 10,000). Italy had not won a gold in the 10,000 meters since 1990, when Salvatore Antibo did so at the European Championships held in Split, then Yugoslavia. In the same race, Italy's Pietro Riva placed fifth, with a time of 27:50.51 (his personal best).
