Irene Ciuffoletti, a verified Italian-American supercentenarian, has passed away aged 113. The Gerontology Research Group, which tracks people older than 110 worldwide, says she was the fourth-oldest person living in the U.S. She was born Jan. 19, 1903, in the Italian region of Basilicata, and emigrated to New Kensington, Pennsylvania, in 1912.
When she was 11 years old, World War I broke out and three of her sons served in World War II more than 20 years later. During the Second World War, Irene hung a flag with three blue stars in her window — one for each of her sons who was serving. Her youngest son, Julius Ciuffoletti, who lives in Arnold, Pennsylvania, told the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review that his mother 'saw a lot of history'. He's the only one of her five sons who is still alive.
