Mariette DiChristina grew up in North Tarrytown, NY, with an interest in science and astronomy. She graduated from Boston University in 1986 with a degree in journalism. She married her two interests – journalism and science – by focusing on the two subjects in college. Right out of school, she was hired by Gannett Westchester Newspapers as a local reporter. A year later, she was hired by Popular Science magazine as a copy editor. She quickly moved up the corporate ladder from associate editor to senior editor, and, finally, to executive editor in 1997.

More recently, Mariette has taught science writing at New York University. In December 2009, she was named the Editor-in-Chief of Scientific American, the oldest continuously published monthly magazine in the U.S. Her appointment made her the first female "to assume the top post in the magazine's 165-year history" (NPG). Under her leadership, the magazine has committed itself to promoting and supporting STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education.
