Marisa Tomei was born on December 4, 1964, in Brooklyn, New York. Her parents – Patricia (née Bianchi) and Gary Tomei – were both Italian and had family that came to America from Tuscany and Sicily. While she was growing up, Marisa became enthralled with Broadway musicals and plays.
Her parents encouraged her to take up acting, and she starred in several productions while in high school. During her first year in college, Marisa was cast in the television series As the World Turns. After finishing her stint on the daytime soap in 1985, she looked to start her career in films as well as off- and on-Broadway productions.
