Twenty years ago, The Sopranos made the airwaves safe for antiheroes and auteurist television, and also paved the way for our current #PeakTV era. If you’re a fan of The Shield, Battlestar Galactica, Breaking Bad or Game of Thrones, you owe the show’s creator, David Chase, a debt of gratitude.

But we’ve been living in a post-Sopranos world for so long, it’s sometimes difficult to remember what TV looked like before New Jersey’s most famous fictional mob family — Tony, Carmela, Meadow and A.J., played respectively by James Gandolfini, Edie Falco, Jamie-Lynn Sigler and Robert Iler — entered our lives on Jan. 10, 1999.
