Creating a memorial sculpture for the Italian immigrant victims of the "Wreck on the Wabash" is personal for Detroit artist Sergio De Guisti. An Italian-American immigrant himself, De Guisti said when he heard of the effort in Adrian to recognize the victims of the 1901 train crash, he wanted to put his all into honoring the victims. So he is creating a sculpture to go over the five graves.

"I'm very touched by this," he said of the effort. "It's become very important to me." On Thanksgiving eve in 1901, two trains collided near Seneca, killing more than 100 Italian immigrants who recently had come to the U.S. They never were given a funeral service and the grave site at Oakwood Cemetery in Adrian wasn't located or identified as the place where they were buried until this past winter.
