On Saturday, bocce ball teams and spectators gathered at Ferguson Memorial Park to participate in the annual West Virginia Italian Heritage Festival Bocce Tournament. "This is the biggest it has been. We have 15 teams this year," said Carl Felosa, festival board member. "It's the best year we've had. We had plenty of food for everyone."
Bocce is an Italian game in which two teams are pitted against each other. Both teams compete with four balls. The goal is to get the larger balls closest to the smaller ball, or the pallina, in order to score points. In order to win, a team must amass 12 points, but it has to win by at least two points. On Saturday, teams were comprised of young and old players, ranging in age from their early teens to their mid-80s. Lou Belcastro, 85, said he has been playing bocce for a very long time.
