After emigrating from Italy, Guest made a life in the American West

By: Connie Owen

Rena Guest, born in 1929, remembers every detail of growing up in the Tyrol Mountains in northern Italy. Her father was the only baker in the valley where she was raised. She recalls the need to wear what she calls “powerful shoes” because she lived in a mountain village close to the Swiss border.

She had her first ice cream cone at age 7 when her father took her into the city. It was the best thing she had ever eaten so she wanted to save it. She placed it in her pocket so she could finish it after church. Of course, it melted. She accused someone of stealing it. Her father bought her another one.
