Italy is continuing to move in the right direction on emissions, with recent data confirming a gradual but consistent decline in greenhouse gases. According to the latest environmental reports, national emissions have dropped significantly over the long term, reaching levels about 26% lower than in 1990. This reduction reflects structural changes in energy production, industry, and efficiency improvements, although progress remains uneven across sectors.
More recent figures show that the downward trend is still active. In 2024, total emissions decreased by around -2.8% compared to the previous year, with production activities alone cutting emissions by -4.5%. The electricity sector has played a central role in this shift, with emissions falling sharply thanks to renewable energy expansion and lower-carbon fuels.
