Giorgio Marrapodi has taken over as Italy’s new Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York, stepping into one of the most important diplomatic roles in the Italian foreign service. He officially assumed his functions on January 19, 2026, succeeding Ambassador Maurizio Massari in leading Italy’s mission to the UN.
Marrapodi is a career diplomat with nearly four decades of experience in international affairs and multilateral engagement. Born in 1961, he graduated with a law degree from the University of Florence in 1984. He began his diplomatic career in 1987 and has served in many key positions throughout Europe and beyond.
Before his latest assignment, he was Italy’s Ambassador to Turkey from 2022 to 2026, where he worked to strengthen economic, cultural, and political ties between Ankara and Rome. During that period, he hosted events connecting Italian and Turkish business communities and highlighted shared interests in economic cooperation and cultural exchange.
Prior to his posting in Turkey, Marrapodi was the Director General for Development Cooperation at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2018 to 2022. Earlier in his career, he served as Italy’s Ambassador to Austria from 2013 to 2017. He also held senior roles at the Ministry in Rome, including Head of the Legal Affairs, Diplomatic Litigation, and Treaties Service from 2010 to 2013.
Marrapodi’s experience with the United Nations dates back to the mid-1990s. From 1994 to 1998, he was posted at Italy’s Permanent Mission to the UN in New York, where he represented Italy to the Second Committee of the General Assembly and engaged with executive boards of key UN funds and programs. He also took part in Security Council sanctions committee work and contributed to Italy’s multilateral agenda on economic and social development.
Throughout his long career, he has combined legal, political, and diplomatic expertise in a wide range of international contexts. As permanent representative in New York, he now represents Italy on the global stage, advocating for effective multilateralism and pushing for progress on peace, sustainable development, and human rights.
