Italy surpasses its medal record at Milano Cortina Paralympics

Italy’s team has already surpassed its previous medal record at the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Paralympics after only four days of competition, thanks largely to strong performances in alpine skiing. The Italian delegation, competing at home with more than 40 athletes across six sports, quickly matched the total medals won at Beijing 2022 and then moved beyond that mark as the Games continued.

A decisive moment came on March 10, when Italy collected four medals in a single day in alpine skiing. The highlight was the gold medal won by Giacomo Bertagnolli, competing with guide Andrea Ravelli, in the visually impaired alpine combined event. The victory marked Bertagnolli’s first gold at the home Paralympics and the fifth Paralympic medal of his career.

Three additional silver medals were also secured that day. Chiara Mazzel, skiing with guide Nicola Cotti Cottini, finished second in the women’s visually impaired combined. It was already her third medal of the Games after winning gold in the Super-G and silver in the downhill earlier in the competition.

Two more Italian skiers reached the podium with silver medals in the same event day. Federico Pelizzari took second place in the men’s standing category, while René De Silvestro earned silver in the men’s sitting classification, adding to Italy’s rapidly growing medal count.

Earlier in the Games another Italian gold medal had arrived in para snowboard, where Emanuel Perathoner won the snowboard cross SB-LL2 event. His victory represented Italy’s first gold of the Paralympics and confirmed the country’s competitiveness across multiple winter disciplines.

By the fourth day of competition Italy had reached at least 9 podium finishes, placing the team among the top nations in the medal standings. The combination of gold and silver medals from athletes such as Bertagnolli, Mazzel, Pelizzari, De Silvestro, and Perathoner allowed the host nation to exceed its previous Paralympic record while the Games were still ongoing.

With several days of competition still remaining before the closing ceremony on March 15, Italy’s medal total is expected to continue growing, driven by strong results in alpine skiing, snowboard, and other winter sports.
