Italy has delivered an extraordinary performance in the new TasteAtlas ranking of the world’s best gelaterias, turning a global list into a celebration of Italian craftsmanship. According to the ranking, the first 20 positions are all Italian, and the first non-Italian address appears only at No. 45. Even more striking, 49 of the first 50 gelaterias are in Italy – a result that confirms how deeply Italian gelato remains connected to quality, tradition, tourism, and local identity.
The podium belongs entirely to two great art cities. First place goes to Gelateria Fatamorgana in Rome, Lazio, with 69 votes. Second is Gelateria dei Gracchi, also in Rome, with 66 votes. Third is Gelateria Vivoli in Florence, Tuscany, with 60 votes. These three names show two different but complementary faces of Italian gelato – Rome’s creative and contemporary scene, and Florence’s historic artisanal tradition.
The geography of the top 20 is also important. The cities represented are Rome, Lazio; Florence, Tuscany; Venice, Veneto; Bologna, Emilia Romagna; Milan, Lombardy; and Turin, Piedmont. Rome and Florence dominate the ranking, while Venice enters the top 10 and appears again in the top 20. Bologna, Milan, and Turin confirm that excellence is not limited to Italy’s most visited tourist routes, but is part of a wider national culture.
TasteAtlas, the international food guide known for mapping and ranking traditional dishes, restaurants, and iconic culinary experiences, gives Italy an exceptional global showcase. The list may spark debate, as all rankings do, but the message is powerful: in the world of gelato, Italy is not just competing – it is setting the standard. From Lazio to Tuscany, from Veneto to Emilia Romagna, Lombardy, and Piedmont, Italian gelato remains one of the country’s most successful ambassadors.
