The Amerigo Vespucci Society (AVS), the oldest Italian American mutual aid society in the United States, proudly participated in Monmouth County’s historic 250th Anniversary Parade on Sunday, June 28, 2026, standing as the only Italian American organization represented in the countywide celebration. Monmouth County New jersey consists of 53 municipalities in central New Jersey.

Promoted as “America’s Big Birthday Parade: Red, White & You!”, the parade commemorated the anniversary of the pivotal Battle of Monmouth. Stepping off at 12:30 p.m. in Middletown Township, the more than two-mile-long parade featured over 90 floats, marching bands, veterans organizations, patriotic displays, community groups, and special guests in a spectacular tribute to America’s 250-year history.

Approximately 30 members of the Amerigo Vespucci Society proudly rode aboard the Society’s float, dressed in matching AVS polo shirts and slacks, showcasing both Italian American pride and the Society’s longstanding commitment to community service. The float was generously provided through the courtesy of AVS Vice President Paul Sgro.

“This parade was a wonderful opportunity for the Amerigo Vespucci Society to celebrate not only America’s 250th anniversary, but also the enduring contributions that Italian Americans have made to the fabric of our nation,” said AVS President Frank Crupi, Esq. “As the nation’s oldest Italian American mutual aid society, we were honored to be the sole Italian American organization participating in this historic event. Our members proudly represented the generations of Italian Americans who have helped build stronger communities while remaining deeply committed to the ideals of freedom, service, and patriotism.”

AVS Vice President Paul Sgro reflected on the significance of the day, saying, “It was truly inspiring to see our members come together and proudly represent the Italian American community during such a historic celebration. Seeing our Society’s float travel the parade route among thousands of spectators was a reminder that our heritage remains an important part of Monmouth County’s story and America’s story. It was an honor to help make that possible.”

Following the parade, attendees gathered at Mater Dei Park for a free family festival featuring live entertainment, food vendors, community organizations, local exhibitors, children’s activities, and patriotic attractions that continued the day’s celebration well into the afternoon.

Founded in 1875 in Long Branch, New Jersey, the Amerigo Vespucci Society is recognized as the oldest Italian American mutual aid society in the United States. For more than 150 years, the Society has preserved Italian heritage while supporting charitable, educational, and civic initiatives throughout Monmouth County and beyond.

The Society’s participation in Monmouth County’s once-in-a-lifetime 250th Anniversary celebration served as a powerful reminder of the lasting role Italian Americans have played in the nation’s history and the continued commitment of the Amerigo Vespucci Society to honoring that proud legacy.
