In the past year Italy has taken a major step forward in its effort to re-green the country – planting more than three million new trees across an area spanning roughly 4,000 hectares, representing about a 31% increase over the previous year. This dramatic expansion marks a concerted push toward improving air quality, sequestering carbon and enhancing biodiversity in both urban and rural landscapes.
What’s more, officials have recently updated the national roll of “monumental trees” – those specimens recognised for their exceptional age, size, species rarity or cultural importance – bringing the total to approximately 4,749 across Italy.
