There is a “secret” bond between the beauty of Michelangelo’s “Moses” and sunlight: it was discovered by Antonio Forcellino, the restorer and architect entrusted by the Superintendence for the Colosseum and the central archaeological area of Rome with cleaning the masterpiece, within a project for the restoration of the entire Tomb of Pope Julius II, inside the church of San Pietro in Vincoli in Rome:
“Michelangelo”, according to Forcellino, “used lead to polish only the parts of the statue that jut out the most – the ones hit by direct sunlight –and left the others with a more rustic finish, using pumice stone and sand. Thus, the sculpture takes on a completely new depth, with a pictorial quality.”
