Since the cornerstone was laid in 1927, Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church at 28 Mulberry St. has been serving the community; in particular, it has served as a home base, of sorts, for the Italian community. As decades have passed, the church has suffered a number of woes, including potentially serious structural issues that need to be addressed.
With the return of the Italian Festival Aug. 21-23, event organizers hope to raise money to help save the church. Our Lady of Mt. Carmel was modeled after a church in Southern Italy, and while the architecture is beautiful - and frankly impressive in that it was made before more modern technology - it was not particularly well-suited for the harsh seasons of New England.
