Puglia’s spirit shines in Chicago at the Italian American Liberty Gala

More than 600 guests gathered in the Chicago area for the 2026 Italian American Liberty Gala, transforming an annual celebration into a powerful tribute to Italian heritage, community pride, and the enduring bond between Southern Italy and the United States.

Held in conjunction with Italy’s Festa della Repubblica and the 250th anniversary of the United States, the event highlighted the deep connections that continue to unite Italians and Italian Americans across generations.

The evening placed a special spotlight on Puglia, one of Italy’s most dynamic and culturally rich regions. Through food, wine, music, fashion, and civic engagement, attendees experienced the traditions and contemporary energy of a territory that has long maintained strong ties with Italian communities abroad. The atmosphere reflected a shared sense of identity that transcends geography, proving that cultural heritage remains a powerful force even thousands of miles from home.

One of the most meaningful moments of the gala was the strengthening of the relationship between Mola di Bari, a coastal town in Puglia, and Roselle, Illinois. The partnership between the two communities symbolizes much more than a formal agreement. It reflects decades of family connections, migration stories, and cultural traditions that have crossed the Atlantic and continue to thrive in both places.

A delegation from Puglia traveled to Chicago to participate in the event, including civic leaders, economic development representatives, tourism officials, entrepreneurs, and cultural ambassadors. Their presence underscored the region’s commitment to strengthening relationships with Italian American communities while promoting opportunities in tourism, business, innovation, and cultural exchange.

Particular attention was given to the growing importance of Roots Tourism, an initiative that encourages descendants of Italian emigrants to reconnect with their ancestral towns and family histories. For many Italian Americans, discovering the villages where their grandparents and great-grandparents once lived is more than a vacation – it is a journey of identity and belonging. The theme resonated strongly with attendees and reflected a broader effort to keep cultural memory alive for future generations.

The gala also celebrated individuals who have made significant contributions to the Italian American community in the Midwest, recognizing leadership, service, and dedication to preserving Italian culture and values. These moments of recognition reinforced the importance of volunteerism, civic engagement, and community building within the Italian American experience.

By the end of the evening, the message was clear: oceans do not separate people who share common roots. Instead, they can serve as bridges connecting families, communities, and generations. The Italian American Liberty Gala demonstrated that the relationship between Puglia and the United States remains vibrant and growing, sustained by history, strengthened by culture, and inspired by a shared vision for the future.
