This past Tuesday, 50 or so Pittsburgh Italians gathered with family and friends in a basement Mexican restaurant in Pittsburgh's Strip District to view the premiere broadcast of "The Italian Americans," a two-part PBS special recounting the travails and triumphs of the Italian diaspora.
Two WQED personalities were there to introduce the program. Tonia Caruso, senior host, got into the event honestly, being half-Italian and half-Irish. Michael Bartley, the all-Irish managing editor, joked that he belonged there because most of the Italians in Pittsburgh had Irish spouses, which garnered a lot of knowing laughs.
