Why America is staying in Italy

By: We the Italians Editorial Staff

Despite recent speculation about a possible reduction of the American military presence in Europe, Italy appears set to remain one of Washington’s most important strategic partners.

Following talks in Washington with U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto stated clearly that there are no plans for a withdrawal of American forces from bases in Italy. The statement carries particular significance because it comes after weeks of debate surrounding the future of U.S. deployments across Europe.

While discussions continue in Washington about reshaping military commitments and encouraging European allies to assume greater responsibilities within NATO, Crosetto emphasized that the United States sees its cooperation with Italy as strategically valuable both bilaterally and within the Atlantic Alliance.

Italy occupies a unique position in the Mediterranean, hosting key American military installations that support operations across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. This geographic advantage has made the country an essential component of U.S. defense planning for decades. Even as the Pentagon evaluates force structures elsewhere on the continent, Rome remains a reliable partner whose strategic importance continues to grow.

The discussions in Washington also focused on NATO's evolving security framework and defense spending. Italy has increased its military investments in recent years and has taken on a more visible leadership role within European security initiatives. According to Crosetto, conversations with American officials reflected appreciation for Italy’s contributions and reinforced the strength of the transatlantic relationship.

The reassurance comes after earlier reports suggesting that President Donald Trump had considered reducing troop levels in certain European countries as part of a broader reassessment of U.S. military commitments abroad. While some adjustments may occur elsewhere, Crosetto said he detected no intention to reduce the American presence in Italy. Instead, discussions pointed toward continued cooperation and shared responsibility within NATO.

For Italy, the message is clear: American bases on Italian soil remain a cornerstone of the security relationship between Rome and Washington. At a time of growing instability in the Mediterranean, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe, both governments appear committed to preserving a partnership that has been a pillar of transatlantic security for more than 75 years.
