The Italian community of San Francisco has been one of the most investigated in Italian American history. Rarely, however, has its experience been examined in relation to the distinctively multiethnic context of the West Coast.
Italian immigrants, arriving to California between the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, encountered different social complexities in comparison to the East Coast—especially given California’s relationship to Mexico as well as the high number of Asian immigrants.
