The Festa del Redentore, or the Feast of the Redeemer, is one of Venice’s most significant and beloved events, celebrated annually on the third weekend of July. This festival has deep historical roots dating back to the 16th century, specifically to 1577, when it was established to give thanks for the end of a devastating plague that had swept through Venice, causing immense suffering and loss.
In gratitude for deliverance from the plague, the Venetian Senate commissioned the construction of the Church of the Redentore (Church of the Redeemer) on the island of Giudecca, a masterpiece designed by the renowned architect Andrea Palladio.
