Dal 2004 è stata introdotta la Giornata nazionale di Cristoforo Colombo (Dir. PCM 20/2/2004) «da svolgersi annualmente il giorno 12 ottobre, ricorrenza dello storico sbarco dell'esploratore genovese nel continente americano», purtroppo ignorata da molti italiani.
Una dimenticanza che può diventare una rimozione o una censura di fronte all'ondata iconoclasta che sta travolgendo l'Occidente e che ha nel navigatore italiano uno dei suoi principali bersagli. Oggi Colombo, dopo aver affrontato e sconfitto i giudizi e i pregiudizi della sua epoca, è costretto a subire quelli del nostro tempo.
