Federal Hill is Providence, Rhode Island’s “Little Italy,” one of America’s storied neighborhoods. This documentary film portrays the traditions and challenges of an Italian-American neighborhood. Once a bustling Italian enclave of cold-water flats and peddlers, Federal Hill now features up scale restaurants and markets.

For Italian American immigrants challenged by poverty, language barriers and discrimination - hard work and education became the path to a better life. By 1900, most of Federal Hill was Italian. But in the 1960s , highway projects destroyed parts of the neighborhood and many residents and businesses were displaced to nearby areas.

The interstate highways constructed in the 1950s and 60s were run through Italian-American “Little Italy” neighborhoods in the major cities of the country, including Sacramento, destroying a way of life. Today, Rhode Island has the highest percentage of Italian-Americans of any State. In the film, We will meet many personalities with ties to federal Hill from many walks of life in this moving depiction of the Italian American experience .
