21-27 January, various venues, SF. Luciano Chessa (SF Conservatory of Music) is among the most interesting and inventive minds working in the Bay Area. Active as a composer, performer, conductor and musicologist, Chessa's work draws heavy influence from experimentation, blending unorthodox ideas with classical form.

"Music the Dead Can Hear": Theosophical Presences in Luigi Russolo's Art of Noises.
Luciano Chessa is the author of Luigi Russolo, Futurist: Noise, Visual Arts, and the Occult (2012). Chessa's study and his lecture present a new reading of the mechanical sound synthesizers-the intonarumori- which painter/musician Luigi Russolo created beginning in 1913: a reading that traces the roots of Russolo's instrument to Leonardo da Vinci's noisemakers. The New Strands Festival (21-24 January) is a vehicle for allowing artists to present experiments and works in progress to a Bay Area audience. It will include new theatrical pieces, readings, and contemporary music including that of Luciano Chessa (23 January, 3pm). Free. Details here.

Ellen Fullman, composer, performer and instrument designer, will present two duet collaborations with composer/performers: Kyle Bruckmann, oboe and Luciano Chessa, dan bau. Both Bruckmann and Chessa extend their instruments beyond the traditional repertoire, exploring personal vocabularies of new sound production. The concert will be divided into two sets, each a series of structured improvisations. More information here.

Three highly singular electro-acoustic musical intermediums set phasers on "other." Strobes, trance, saws, and accordions will be deployed in the service of aesthetic emanations from aetheric realms. Luciano Chessa plays musical saw and electronics in this collaborative concert with Sam Ashley and John Krausbauer. Tickets: $10/15 (door only). More details here.
