During an era in which mainstream society is being told to honor diversity, equity, and inclusion, it seems the only people who don’t benefit from this cultural revolution are those who are of European descent. For example, October is celebrated as Italian American Heritage and Culture Month and has been since 1989.
Yet, as written previously, one would be hard-pressed to find a major corporation, network, or sports league to recognize it the way it does other months. One such megacorporation is the NFL. Earlier in October, the NFL went out of its way to recognize National Hispanic Heritage Month. The league has shown no hesitation in celebrating other cultural and heritage months and established a precedent for doing so. However, no such thing was done to acknowledge Italian American Heritage and Culture Month.
