You may have never heard of it. But this weekend, the Wickliffe Italian-American Club is hosting 12,000-15,000 people at the self-proclaimed largest bocce tournament in the Midwest. The tournament - officially called the Pat O'Brien Chevrolet Cleveland Challenge Cup of Bocce - has been running for 34 years. This year is its biggest year yet, with 104 teams, from 10 states and Canada.
Maybe you've heard of bocce from church or rec leagues. Maybe you think it's a game that retirees play, "walking between the court and the shuffleboard," tournament committee member Paul DiCicco joked. But it's become much more than that.
